This project deals with churches and to be more specific with the churches of Nicosia, from the architectural point of view.
In this study we aim to give the most accurate picture of the historical and religious background of the churches, we examined.
This project is divided into seven chapters:
The first chapter is the "HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE". A small flashback is made, examining the Classical Greece, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Western Christendom.
The second chapter is the "BYZANTINE AND GOTHIC ART". It analyzes Byzantine art, Gothic art, and relation of Cyprus with Byzantine art. The plan and construction of one of the Greatest Byzantine Churchcs, the Santa Sophia of Constantinople is discussed.
The third chapter is "CHURCHES". It includes the Early Christian Churches, the basilican plan and central plan.
The fourth chapter is the "FORMS AND ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS". It includes different forms and details of churches.
The fifth is the "HISTORY OF CYPRUS". It includes five periods. The First Byzantine period, the period of Arab raids, the Byzantine period, the period of Frankish – Venetian occupation and the period of Turkish occupation.
The sixth chapter is the "CHURCHES OF CYPRUS". It includes different types of Churches in Cyprus generally and a second part of this chapter examines in more detail the Churches of Nicosia.
