Reliable, simple, more and more competitive for an increasing number of applications the photovoltaic conversion of solar energy asserts itself industrially and will continue to follow an important growth rate along the next few years.
What is it?
From devices called solar cells or photocells the solar irradiation is converted into electricity.
Made of silicon these photocells were first manufactured
in the 1950's and were used to produce energy on-board satellites. Since 1970 terrestrial applications of the photocells have been diversified and widened: Telecommunications, village powering, schools, water pumping, remote military posts, cathodic protection etc.
Over the next twenty years the forecasted growth is tremendous with very important efforts of research and developement industrialisation, market distribution being made by many industries.
