Cyprus has been and continues to be of great interest for all, for learning because it is a microcosm of all the elements, problems and opportunities of a much larger and complex developing nation.
The images and words in this project could represent the housing evolution of many other countries such as Greece, England, France and Italy, and indeed could serve as a model as to how a society might remain in part physically, enviromentally and socially intact in the face of adversity and change.
Architecture creates buildings and cities. However, building a home and a city also means building a family, building a nation, building a civilization-and that is the great social mission of architecture.
We started this project with an approach of the phases of Architecture and some examples from other countries had been clearly shown. From this representation appeared the differences and similarities of the other counties with Cyprus.
We explained the evolution of the architecture of the other countries from:
(a) Prehistoric, (b) Architecture of Greece, (c) Roman architecture, (d) Medieval and Romanesque, (e) Gothic architecture, (f) The Renaissance in Europe, (g) Baroque in Italy and (i) The Modern architecture until today with the evolution of the Cyprus architecture from prehistoric year until today.
It is meant to tell the story through written observations of how a specific culture has managed to house itself through the onslaught of social and economic change, the impact of consumerism and technology, and political violence.
The purpose of this investigation, through Cyprus and foreign architecture is to realise and understand the importance of the question:
"Is it architecture dead in Cyprus?" in order to find an answer.
Is the architecture in Cyprus, the only art which presents the image of the society of Cyprus and its activities or always presents the sincere thought and action of the human being?
We have accepted that a nation constitutes the merits, pictures and conception of ifs own life.
The tradition constitutes the nation's identity and every newcoming generation must know its own tradition and its own identity, especially nowadays, which many factors are trying to prove the opposite.
For example in Cyprus:
(I) The tourism: bringing to Cyprus his own way of life which is completely different from Cyprus life.
(II) The foreign-mania of the Cypriots.
(III) The Cypriots students, which a large percentage studied abroad.
(IV) The technology and the political violence.
All these factors-are bringing to our island, to the new generation crisis about our identity, so that we may ask ourselves: Who we are? Where we are going? What we expect from our life? How will our generation meet the new century?
What is the factor which can keep our identity alive and dinstiguishable from other identities? Can the architecture to connect the old with the new in order to help the Cypriots to find, a new identity, their own original identity according to their own politistic inheritence?
Definitely the past gave us an unvaluable treasure, in architecture, but which are these architectural characteristics and how can we preserve them?
How we had managed to standing with one leg in the past and one in future?
What is the real meaning of the sentence "one future for our past?" and
Why the present cannot faced the problem about our identity itself, taking from the past all the valuable architectural examples, in order to create the identity of our existence, the identity of the Cyprus nation?
