The main purpose of this project was to study the history of architecture and compare it with the various forms of architecture in Nicosia.
The project is divided into two main parts.
Part A deals with the history of architecture in Europe. This section consists of nine sub-sections and an introduction. In the se sub-sections different architectural styles, that developed in 3urope, from the earliest years to the present days, are examined.
Part B deals with the form of architecture in Nicosia and consists of seven chapters. In these chapters the Gothic, Renaissance and Classical influences on the architecture of Nicosia are analysed. Also the materials and elements used in buildings, apartments and offices, architectural solutions to corners and a brief typological analysis of old Nicosia are examined together with the presentation of photos.
The main conclusion arising from this work is that most of the old buildings found nowadays in Nicosia, are those build during the Turkish and English rules. The houses build during the Turkish rule show that people were very conservative and prejudice. The English rule brought new ideas, new styles from Europe and a new way of living. From the houses build during this period it can be concluded that people felt freer than during the Turkish rule.
