The main objectives of the project Timber as a structural material for dwellings are:
1. to carry out the architectural drawings of a two storey dwelling. The land provided for the design was specified by the supervisor.
The two-storey dwelling is designed by using timber as the main material. All members consisting the studs walls and roofs are mainly made from wood. The roof is designed as a pitch roof and tiles are used as a covering. Thermal insulation and fire stops are provided in all members.
2. to carry out all the structural design using timber as the structural material. The design is made considering that all spans examined are simply supported. Thus in checking if bending and deflection is O.K. then the section chosen is satisfactory.
3. to compare between a dwelling made from concrete with the wooden dwelling stating advantages and disadvantages. Wood's and concrete's properties advantages and disadvantages of each are explained and discussed in chapter three.
