Traffic congestion and road safety is a serious problem in urban areas of Cyprus. Traffic management is an indispensable tool in solving this problem.
The main objective of Traffic management is to maximise the existing road system capacity without effecting the quality of the environment. Other objectives include: improve road safety enhance the environment, improve vehicle circulation.
Urban Traffic Control (UTC) is an important traffic management measure. It is recommended to install UTC systems in Cyprus since they offer the best use of the existing network, reduce journey times and can give priority to emergency vehicles and buses.
Road safety is another important issue. Remedial measures on accident black spots are based on the relevant accident data. collision diagrams and road conditions.
Vehicle speed is also considered. The measures for influencing vehicle speed are: imposing a speed limit, physical control.
High Public Transport usage is beneficial to the community. As an example there is a description of the schemes and measures recommended to encourage the use of public transport in Nicosia.
A general parking policy is of paramount importance. Using Nicosia as an example such a policy is described.
Pedestrian safety can be improved by providing pedestrian facilities. These facilities include channelization facilities at traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and pedestrian refuges.
Finally other traffic management measures discribed including the one way street system road pricing control and restriction of turning movements.
