Timber species may be categorized either as hardwoods or softwoods, according, to their characteristics such as their colour, their lightness, their weights etc.
In our construction Industry, the softwood Is the most commonly used due to Its strength requirements, durability In service and serviceability. Such softwood are: European Redwood, European Whltewood and Canadian Spuse-Plnetlr.

The strength of Timber Is reduced by defects such as follows:

Shakes
Splits
Checks
(ii) Distortion
Conversion defects
Grade stresses
Grade stress Is the safe stress for a Timber member which gives account the defects of knots on the strength of the Timber.
